Westray Pottery
MARTIN TERRELL
Martin was brought up in rural Sussex, the son of a design engineer.
His father developed and built an original potter`s wheel during his
teens and so the seeds of a possible career had been planted. Although
after college Martin spent a number of years in commerce, he wanted to
have a more creative lifestyle and so moved to the West country in
1980, setting up workshop with kiln and potter`s wheel.
He taught himself the basics and supplied pottery to a local restaurant.
He developed his style of pottery in different contexts: in a
farming community in Dorset, followed by two seasons in the Channel
Islands working in large commercial potteries. Eventually he ended up
in a fishing village in Devon where he had a small workshop. He was
part of the original team for the highly successful Marine House
Gallery and it was on the back of this success that he decided to make
the radical move to Orkney.
Martin plans to continue developing his original designs and glazes in
conjunction with his partner Sacha, effectively capturing the
atmosphere and spirit of Orkney.
